Why Boston Is Different

The Boston Marathon is unlike any other race on earth. Run every Patriots' Day (third Monday in April), it is the world's oldest annual marathon — first held in 1897 — and the only major marathon that requires runners to qualify based on their finish time at another sanctioned marathon. That exclusivity, combined with the legendary course and the crowd along Boylston Street, makes it one of the most coveted bibs in running.

Qualifying Standards

The Boston Athletic Association (BAA) sets qualifying standards by age group. The times below are the minimum qualifying standards — because of high demand, runners typically need to beat their standard by a meaningful margin to actually receive entry. Always check the BAA's official website for the most current cutoff data before your qualifier race.

The Course: From Hopkinton to Boylston

The point-to-point course runs 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to Copley Square in Boston. It's a deceptively challenging course — the first half is mostly downhill, which can lull runners into going out too fast, and the famous Newton Hills arrive between miles 16 and 21.

Key Course Sections

  • Miles 1–8 (Hopkinton to Framingham): Mostly downhill. Resist the urge to bank time here. Stay disciplined.
  • Miles 8–16 (Natick to Wellesley): Relatively flat through the famous Scream Tunnel at Wellesley College around mile 13.
  • Miles 16–21 (Newton Hills): Four hills culminating in Heartbreak Hill at mile 20. This is where races are lost.
  • Miles 21–26.2 (Newton to Boylston): Net downhill. Dig deep — the roar of the crowd on Boylston will carry you home.

Race-Day Strategy

  1. Start conservatively. The downhill first miles are a trap. Run the first 5K slower than goal pace.
  2. Fuel early and often. Aid stations appear roughly every mile. Don't wait until you're thirsty or hungry.
  3. Walk the hills if needed. Power-hiking Heartbreak Hill is a legitimate strategy that many experienced Boston runners swear by.
  4. Know the weather. Boston in April can be anything from 25°F to 75°F. Check forecasts in the final week and adjust your clothing and hydration plan accordingly.
  5. Enjoy Boylston. Turn onto Boylston Street and soak it in. You earned this.

Logistics & Travel Tips

  • Stay near the finish line in Back Bay — you'll be grateful not to walk far after the race.
  • The BAA provides shuttle buses from Boston Common to Hopkinton on race morning. Arrive early.
  • Bag check closes before the race; pack a gear bag with warm clothes for post-race.
  • Book accommodation at least 6–12 months in advance — Boston fills up fast.
